Hi Guys,
I'm a bit late, but let me add this. I've seen many different types and sizes of sand sold as play sand. Around here (CO) it is often a very coarse mix of granite and silica grains best used for gaining traction on ice and snow - no good for casting.
Other brands/times it is a nice fine clean silica sand that would be at least fair to good for casting sand.
So I'll agree w/ posts below. If you have clean sand w/ grains nearly fine as sugar - you're in business. Home Depot here stocks it with the drywall & concrete as play sand, masonary sand, or general purpose sand (Sakcrete 4000, ect.). Sand blast sand should also work fine. All above are also often available at a real lumber yard - if there are any left.
True that sharp sand is better & stronger, but roundish sand is quite workable (mine is much rounder than I expected).
Hope it helps,
CT2
