Rick,
I think you need to look at your drive train. I susspect that you are "babying" your machine. If you think of it, it's a flat lathe, the difference being moving the tool instead of the work piece. A 5 thou cut in 6061 is nothing. The tool has to be pushed, and there has to be enough inertia and torque to make the metal cut. The beginning of each stroke is like the beginning of the cut on a lathe, the spindle hasto be recieving enough power to not be stoped when the tool is introduced.
