Rick, when I was a teen, my dad bought an appliance repair business in a small town. I made soda & comicbook money repairing toasters and toaster ovens using a monel splice. We had a box of them, cost about a nickle apiece. I charged $3 for a repair, as it was too much trouble (to him) for my dad to do them. The splices were just a half-inch long tube of monel, and we crimped them over the ends of the broken element. Fluxing them, and using MAPP or acetylene might not be a bad idea, but just the crimp lasted at least a year.

The toaster and such didn't get as hot, nor stay hot as long, as a furnace or kiln element, but it would be worth trying if you could find some of those splices. I've googled them to no effect, so far, but just started looking tonight. They were tubes about the size of a cheap ballpen refill, and only a little more difficult to crimp than the cheap copper splice connectors from HF & the like.

I did repair my heatgun by twisting the broken wires together, and nipping off the excess. So far, so good. I ran it on high for 30 minutes or so while heatshrinking the splices on my old welder's power inputs.

Might be a waste of time, might help.
