Hi Nelson
Some of the parts/ structures I build the HRS shapes work fine. I have the motor
mounted on some of it. The spindle is mounted on it, but it is to light of metal.
The headstock needs some thick metal to be stiff enought for the size of the
machine I have. It has to much give. The new one will be CRS to be good.

The metal over at the "Big Box Store" is good for the "Weekend Warrior"
to repair a picnic table,or some other project.

Building the machines we do ,an accurate part to start with is good.
A lot of builders have nothing to work with, except a few hand tool.
So if they have something that is fairly accurate to start with, that is half
the battle. If they can build a machine that is good for 0.002 they would be happy.

I have a machine that needs 48in long ways, and they are two of them, spaced 6in apart.
I have a feeling that getting them to work is going to be a major undertaking.

That wasn't right of me either. I'm sorry but sometimes we need to get away from "The Uncle Dave's Way". The steel that you are referring to is not designed to be perfect. It is structure steel, heavy construction, made to be welded, not machined to some standard of perfect. By the time you do all the milling, wear and tear on your equipment, wear on your tooling (not to mention breakage) maybe it would be cheaper to buy the good stuff to start with.
I know---------------my two cents

This kind of metal I found is very common so if I can make it work, that will be an advantage. I much prefer the strap that is rolled on all 4 sides but it seems to be replaced by just shearing larger sheets of steel. The edges tend to be rather sharp which I certainly do not like.

Hi Rick
I think I would find a strip that was not sheared.
I got some CRS strips that are rolled on all 4 sides.
I think it would not take much to true them up.
