I'm pretty sure the basic tools of architecture and civil engineering --
the straight edge (or snap line), square, and plumb bob/level, were used
in construction of Hammurabi's granaries and the Tower of Babel, both of
which predate the epic building phases of Egypt by centuries. It's
tempting to suggest that invention of methods for creating these most
basic instruments was a prerequisite for building anything more
sophisticated than a hut, whether working in wood, stone, or mud brick.
