Ron,
Cast iron would certainly be easy to file/scrape plus should be rather
stable. I see that it costs $1.60/inch...
But you do give me another idea. I could cast a few from ZA-12.
There is NO way I would tangle with big box store weights. I've seen what
they can do to cutters!

I'd try a chunk of cast iron. You can buy it in pieces.
