I have been doing this for more than 20 years now and even the HF mics and calipers are good unless you drop them. The major caution I have to make is to carefully inspect the instrument before buying to see if the markings on the spindle are engraved or photo etched. We had starting about 15 years ago problems with Mitutoyo mics because their spindles are now etched instead of engraved and with some coolants or cutting oils they will wipe off the spindle. Because I had over 40 that this happened to in less than 6 months of purchase Mitutoyo bought them back from our employees. I would not count on this happening for individuals. Thus I recommend checking before buying to determine if the markings on the spindle are etched or engraved as I have found that several other companies have started copying Mitutoyo with this much cheaper method of marking the instrument spindles.
