Not quite, but an area in development now is laser metal sintering, which aims to create metal parts directly via 3d printing from powder.

Another possibility to make the patterns would be 3d CNC milling used on wood routing. The technology is well within the reach of hobbyists, and the raw materials can be much cheaper than plastic filament (i.e. scrap wood :-)
