was cutting 1/2" steel sheet with an oxy propane torch and a drop of molten
steel landed on the top of his foot and melted through the running shoe.
I've done about 30 pours now, and although I don't have alot of the super
fancy safety gear (and the heat just melts the faceshields I attempted to
wear in the beginning) I made myself a pair of thick leather spats just in
case, and I'm always incredibly careful about keeping any tripping hazards
away from area between the forge and the rolling table the flask is on.
Haven't had any close calls yet, so I think the system is pretty good.
The guy from the foundry supply store gave me and a buddy a really in depth
lesson on safety and especially the importance of keeping moisture away from
the crucible, so I feel as though I'll manage to do this without any harm.
Although I wish there was some product I could put on the crucible to keep
the chunks of coal from sticking too it, when those fall of while red hot
they are a bit nerve wracking.
Eventually I'll make a proper blast furnace and not have to worry about it
anymore.
