No then you tighten up the clamp, if it was metal, you would need more pressure on the clamp. With the part to be cut being above the clamp, the bottom of clamp would close more than the top and possibly allow the piece to slip out. If you had the same cut out on top and bottom, using a scrap piece on the bottom the clamp would close even top and bottom, less tendency to slip upward.
