Sorry but what you have in the article is not what I was suggesting.
My idea was indeed to allow the moving jaw to rotate to 45 deg, but only use one of aluminium angle pieces, the one with the notches. Turn it over so the notches in the angle are against the saw table holding the workpiece from above, one leg of the aluminium angle still sticking out perpendicular to the fixed jaw. The moving jaw against the workpiece clamping it into the cut outs. A clamp would still needed to hold the alumunium angle against the fixed jaw.
