The basic idea in all of these fast engage nuts is that the thread can be moved into the rod quickly. They all need to contain the rod or the clamping force would push the threads away from each other.
I wonder if a thread cut with the opposite slope on the underside could draw the threads together during clamping. You would then be able to have threads on one vertical face of the tapped hole and the other side could be open. The nut would essentially be cut in half longitudinally. Then you would just push the nut up against the threaded rod and tighten.
