Wedding guests reported hearing a deafening explosion, and say that the Color Red rocket alert system failed to go off. The IDF Home Front Command said it would look into why alert was not activated.
No injuries or damage were reported in the attack on Ofakim.
Meanwhile, the Eshkol Regional Council reported a mortar attack originating from Gaza. The shell landed in an open area.

Tensions in Egypt appear to be spreading to Gaza: Grad rockets fired from the Hamas-ruled territory Monday night landed near the southern Israeli cities of Ofakim and Netivot. Also Monday, a Qassam rocket exploded in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council. No injuries or damage were reported Another Grad hit the Ofakim area a few minutes later, but there were no reports of injury or damage. ![]() Scene of explosion in Netivot (Photo: Roee Idan) "It was terrifying," an Ofakim resident said. "We heard a boom – like a nuclear bomb. We thought it was thunder; there was smoke and
One of the people who attended a wedding in a small hall near the rocket's landing site in the Netivot area said, "There was music, then we suddenly hear a loud blast. Everyone - little children and men – ran for cover. People fell over one another. It's a miracle no one was hurt." Another person who attended the wedding said, "Luckily, the rocket landed after the chuppah, while everyone was already eating at the tables. If it had landed a few meters closer, this could have been a mass casualty event." Rise in activityColonel Eitan Yitzhak, the Home Front's Southern Command chief told Ynet that the missile alert systems did not work Monday and added that the army has launched an inquiry into the matter. He noted that civilians are instructed to continue with routine activity and follow Home Front Command guidelines in case of any alert. "In the past month there have been a number of events and put together one can say there is a rise in activity," he said. Meanwhile, Ofakim residents are complaining of a shortage of shelters and fortified spaces. Yaffa, who lives near the scene of the explosion, said: "I was making a cup of coffee and suddenly heard a blast. It caused me to move sideways towards the oven and my window was cracked. I'm traumatized and afraid of sleeping. We are at God's mercies, I don't even have a protective space here. They need to reenter Gaza and launch another operation." Ilana Curiel and Shmulik Hadad contributed to the report |

In-Depth Issues: Muslim Brotherhood: "Prepare Egyptians for War with Israel" - Yaakov Lappin (Jerusalem Post) A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt told the Arabic-language Iranian news network Al-Alam on Monday that he would like to see the Egyptian people prepare for war against Israel, according to the Hebrew-language business newspaper Calcalist. Muhammad Ghannem said the Suez Canal should be closed immediately, and that the flow of gas from Egypt to Israel should cease "in order to bring about the downfall of the Mubarak regime." He added that "the people should be prepared for war against Israel," saying the world should understand that "the Egyptian people are prepared for anything to get rid of this regime." Lessons from Egypt - Dan Ephron (Newsweek) Most analysts and former officials believe whoever ends up ruling in Cairo - even the Muslim Brotherhood - will be reluctant to antagonize Israel or other Western countries. "They will have to focus on internal matters for the first two or three years," says Giora Eiland, a retired general and Israel's former national security adviser. "They will need American aid and foreign investment. If they take control, they're not going to rush into war." Already, guns and rocket launchers flow from Egypt to Hamas under the border through a network of tunnels dug by Palestinians. Israelis worry that a government headed by the Muslim Brotherhood would allow the flow of more sophisticated weapons. "This wou ld make Hamas much stronger and more difficult to deal with," says Eiland. Even if Egypt stabilizes, analysts believe the Israeli military will have to retrain and reequip itself for a range of new scenarios - and that means more defense spending. Tourism Hit Hard by Egyptian Demonstrations - Melanie Lidman (Jerusalem Post) The demonstrations' effect was most acutely felt in Nazlet e-Samman, the village located next to the Great Pyramids, which is totally dependent on tourism. Since the Pyramids closed on Saturday amid fears of looting, the village's only source of income has dried up and it will take weeks or months for tourists to return in force. The residents of Nazlet e-Samman were almost unanimous in their support for President Hosni Mubarak. They said the protesters were upper-class Cairenes who don't understand the importance of the stability that Mubarak brought to their lives. One Grad rocket smashed into the town of Ofakim and a second rocket slammed into Netivot, not far from a building where a wedding was taking place. Four people were treated for shock from the attack on Netivot and a vehicle was damaged. | News Resources - North America, Europe, and Asia:

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright~
