Beyond Left and Right: The Case for
Libertarianism

featuring
David Boaz
Executive Vice President, Cato Institute

moderated by
Joey Coon
Director of Student Programs, Cato Institute

Ten years of Bush-Obama big government have put many Americans in a libertarian state of mind. Can there be a real challenge to the welfare-warfare state? Libertarians have an alternative: individual liberty, free markets, limited constitutional government, and peace. But how do we get there?

With politicians on both the left and the right seeking ever more power over the lives of ordinary Americans, it is time to reevaluate the purpose and limits of government. This Cato On Campus event, co-sponsored with the D.C. Forum for Freedom, will discuss the challenges to liberty today and offer a compelling vision for the future—one that embraces the dignity of the individual and the efficacy of civil society to solve problems and improve the lot of mankind.

David Boaz is the executive vice president of the Cato Institute and has played a key role in the development of the Cato Institute and the libertarian movement. He is a provocative commentator and a leading authority on domestic issues such as education choice, drug legalization, the growth of government, and the rise of libertarianism. He is the author of Libertarianism: A Primer, editor of The Libertarian Reader, and coeditor of the Cato Handbook for Policymakers. Boaz's most recent book is The Politics of Freedom.
