This is a "loaded" question. :)
If you have read through enough of the first book you should
have noticed Gingery uses a quart as his size measurement.
There are several reasons for this. However.....
In relation to your weight question? :)
What type of AL will you be using? Each alloy will be a
different weight. Especially if you get into some of the
zinc based alloys.
If you are using "scrap" you will need more metal then the
final weight of the machine.
You are probably looking at around 100lb of scrap to get a
good running start on each machine.
Again the type of metal and type of scrap will make a
difference.
Previously cast AL in larger chunks will produce less waste
than AL sheet / cans. For example :)
There are a lot of "accessories" that you may or may not
make as well as other things that creep into the project as
you go.
They will consume metal as well.
