Hi Wonk,

I don't see that there's anything wrong with using the books other than originally planned by Dave. I haven't stopped working metal, but I now have a 13 X 36 lathe (US 13" swing, UK 6 1/2") lathe, an Emco Compact, I was given, missing its motor, a large french Universal mill, with DRO, an M 10 Elliot shaper, metal bandsaw, a Clarkson T&G, a plasma cutter a foundry, forge, TIG, MIG a 2.05meter box brake large modele drill press and a lot of woodworking tools. I understand your pleasure in building your stuff, I build tooling and set ups. Once I have the stuff I moved into another area, I was a metalworker before I started reading Gingery, and I haven't stopped being on! I also earn my living with my machines.

Best wishes! Matthew

I built the series back in the late 70's and 80's, and have started on making another set now. I made the first ones to spec from the plans, but might try some mods this time around?

The books led me into casting I would begin a machine, and then one would turn up so I didn't have to finish ! I have a top-slide with nowhere to go, parts of a full-size power hack saw, ZA castings for the "Tinker" T&G (Norman Tinker, no relation was from the North of England, my family of Tinkers were from the south of England it is my real name!) assorted face plates in Al, machine handles etc. Things get incorporated into other machines, parts of the "Tinker" and a gingery type mill are now used in tool holding on my Clarkson T&G. As I've been on this road for a long time, I had a lot of the basic skills, but I still learnt a lot because of branching out.
