Why Are So Many Public Figures Ranting Against "The Jews"? by Alan M. Dershowitz (As always, Dershowitz is on target.  Its the same old classic Jew hating, but today they cowardly hide under the politically correct label of "anti-Zionist; as if they are fooling anyone. MBS)

March 6, 2011 at 5:00 pm
When celebrities are drunk, on drugs or just high on their own egos, they often engage in rants. These days many such rants are captured on cell phone videos or audio tapes and go viral on the internet. Nothing surprising there. What is surprising to many is that the rant de jour these days seems to be directed against Jews.
Consider the former Dior designer, John Galliano, who was sitting in a bar in a Jewish section of Paris and announcing his love for Hitler and smiling as he told the people at an adjoining table, who he apparently assumed to be Jewish, that "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f—– gassed."
Or consider Charlie Sheen who claims to be high on Charlie Sheen, attacking his producer by emphasizing the Jewish nature of his original name, Chaim Levine.
Or Oliver Stone telling an interviewer last year that too much attention is paid to the Holocaust because of "Jewish domination of the media." And that Hitler wasn't all that terrible to the Jews.
Then there is the Reverend Louis Farrakhan, ranting and raving about Satanic Jews controlling the world.
This is not an entirely new phenomenon. Mel Gibson delivered a similar rant when he was stopped by Los Angeles police in 2006. "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
Generally, sobriety results in apology, but the damage has been done.
The question is why the Jews? There's an old joke about a Nazi rally in Nuremberg where Hitler is screaming, "Who causes all of Germany's problems?" An old man in the crowd shouts back, "the bicycle riders." Hitler's taken by surprise and asks, "why the bicycle riders?" To which the old man replies, "why the Jews?" That was the 1930s. But "why the Jews" in the second decade of the 21st Century?
Let me suggest two possible answers. The first is that little about the nature of prejudice has really changed, but the advent of the age of high technology has brought private prejudices into the public arena. In commenting on the Galliano outburst, Michael Goubert, a French DJ and music designer, observed that "virulent views like those expressed by [Galliano] are not rare." But "the public expression" of intolerance is unusual and particularly troubling, according to patrons of the bar in which Galliano expressed his bigoted views. The pervasiveness of cell phone videos and the widespread use of the social media have blurred the line between private and public expression. What used to be only whispered to friends at a bar is now broadcast around the world.
There is a second, a far more troubling answer to "Why the Jews?" Prominent public figures have blurred another line as well—the line between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, between attacking the Jewish state and attacking the Jewish people. Consider widely publicized remarks made by Bishop Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the American Model of Freedom, and a man openly admired and praised by President Obama. He has called the Jews "a peculiar people" and has accused "the Jews" of causing many of the world's problems. He has railed against "the Jewish Lobby," comparing its power to that of Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin.
He has said that "the Jews thought they had a monopoly of God: Jesus was angry that they could shut out other human beings." He has said that Jews have been "fighting against" and being "opposed to" his God. He has "compared the features of the ancient Holy Temple in Jerusalem to the features of the apartheid system in South Africa." He has complained that "the Jewish people with their traditions, religion and long history of persecution sometimes appear to have caused a refugee problem among others." Tutu has minimized the suffering of those murdered in the Holocaust by asserting that "the gas chambers" made for "a neater death" than did Apartheid. He has complained of "the Jewish Monopoly of the Holocaust," and has demanded that its victims must "forgive the Nazis for the Holocaust," while refusing to forgive the "Jewish people" for "persecute[ing] others."
He has complained that Americans "are scared…to say wrong is wrong because the Jewish lobby is powerful—very powerful." He has accused Jews—not Israelis—of exhibiting "an arrogance—the arrogance of power because Jews are a powerful lobby in this land and all kinds of people woo their support."
Tutu has acknowledged having been frequently accused of being anti-Semitic," to which he has offered two responses: "Tough luck;" and "my dentist's name is Dr. Cohen."
Former President Jimmy Carter too has contributed to this new legitimization of Jew-bashing, by echoing Tutu's derisive talk about the Jewish domination of America ("powerful political, economic and religious forces…that dominate our media") and his use of the term "Apartheid" in his book about Israel.
By thus blurring the line between legitimate political criticism and illegitimate bigotry, widely admired people like Tutu and Carter tend to legitimate the kind of anti-Semitic attitudes that manifest themselves in the rants of celebrities like Galliano, Sheen, Gibson and others.
This blurring has also affected the tone on university campuses around the world, where Tutu and Carter are particularly admired and imitated. I speak on campuses throughout the world and I had never, until recently, heard and seen the kind of language now being directed against Jewish students and faculty who support Israel.
So I was not as surprised as some by the recent celebrity rants. The oldest prejudice has never quite disappeared. It just went underground and has now resurfaced as a result of new technology and new legitimization by the likes of Bishop Tutu and Jimmy Carter.
Fortunately there are intelligent and principled young celebrities like Natalie Portman who are trying to offset this development by speaking out against bigotry.

1. Sultan Yaqub Letter: "I Saw a Body on the Tank's Catwalk"  by Rachel Sylvetsky Sultan Yaqub Letter Released
(So why isn't the "international community: (who whines and whines endlessly about Israel, NOT doing anything about this?  And even more importantly, why hadn't Bush or Obama done anything about this, at least for the American citizen? MBS)
Several days ago, the British Foreign Office gave the lawyer representing Mrs. Mriam Baumel, mother of IDF soldier Zachary Baumel, a document that sheds new light on the mystery of the three soldiers still missing in action from the June 11,1982 battle of Sultan Yaqub, the last battle of the 1st Lebanon War.

Zachary Baumel, a US citizen, Tzvi Feldman and Yehuda Katz are the three IDF soldiers still listed as missing in action from that date. Since then, their parents have searched ceaselessly for any information about their sons' fate. Zachary's father died without knowing what happened to his son.

The existence of the letter, dated May 2, 1989, became known when Reverend Bob Caroll, head of United Kingdom MIA publicized its existence.  The British Foreign Office refused to reveal its contents to the distraught parents, claiming it might harm the United Kingdom's relations with Syria, until Miriam Baumel recently sued for its release.

The letter, brought in full below, was published in the Hebrew Makor Rishon on Friday. INN could not ascertain if Mrs. Baumel was told to whom the expurged name refers.

From Lt. Colonel Andrian H. Peck OBE

                                                                                                                                               2ndMay 1989 (Stamped Received 04 May 1989)

Near East and North Africa Department

Foreign & Commonwealth Office

King Charles Street

London SWA 2AH

Dear Mr. Haywood,

Thank you for  your letter of 27thApril 1989 concerning the enquiries of Mrs. Miriam Baumel.

In fact, I did not see the Israeli tank paraded round the main square of Damascus on 11thJune. However, I did see it on the   main Damascus/Beirut road in the vicinity of the Lebanese border, whilst it was en route to Damascus.

What I saw was reported to the Minister of Defense at that time. I have also been approached by the Israelis more than once, through MoD (Israeli Intelligence, ed.) , for further information. I have spoken to the MoD and I understand that Lt. Col ._____will be making contact with you shortly.

Furthermore, Mrs. Baumel has been in touch recently with Ivor Lucas. I have agreed, on purely humanitarian grounds, with Ivor Lucas, who knows the story now, to meet Mrs. Baumel unofficially when next she visits London!  I think Ivor Lucas will  also probably be in touch with you.

Sadly I fear I have little or nothing to add to what was reported then.  In essence, I saw the tank being driven to Damascus, the vehicle was covered with what I thought were Palestinians. I could not tell if there were any Israeli prisoners in the circumstances. There was, however, one body lying on the catwalk of the tank. It might well be that the driver was a prisoner but one could not be certain.

I hope this and the discussions with ______ and Ivor Lucas will be helpful and put you in touch with the situation.
                                                                                         Yours sincerely

                                                                                         Adrian Peck

Adrian Peck was the military attaché in Damascus during the1st Lebanon War. On the day of the battle, he went out with his driver in the direction of the Lebanese-Syrian border and saw the battle from afar.  Ivor Lucas was the UK ambassador to Syria at the time.

Mrs. Baumel is in possession of a black-and-white photograph of a tank with a uniform-clad body lying on it that was said to have reached Damascus from the battle.  The letter seems to corroborate the authenticity of the photograph.

The letter's  release, in part as a result  of the publicity that Reverend Caroll succeeded in arousing as well as Mrs. Baumel's persistence, may lead to a reevaluation of the IDF MIA investigations thus far, with efforts concentrated on obtaining the report alluded to from the British Foreign Office.

2. Interview with Rav Ya'akov Shapira: We Remember Them Every Day  by David Lev Interview: Merkaz Harav

In the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, the events of March 6, 2008, are etched like fire into the memories of students, teachers, and administrators – and, says Yeshiva Head, Rabbi Ya'akov Shapira, shlita, the massacre that took the lives of eight students from the Yeshiva and its high school has redoubled the determination of the entire Yeshiva community to forge ahead even more forcefully with its commitment to, as Rabbi Shapira told Arutz 7 in an exclusive interview, "the people of Israel, the Torah of Israel, and the Land of Israel."

The Arab terrorist who invaded the Yeshiva on that fateful night did not choose his target at random, says Rabbi Shapira; it was no accident that Alaa Abu Dhein attacked Mercaz Harav. "Our enemies have a sense of where our source of power is, and the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva is a spiritually powerful place, They were attacking not only the Yeshiva, but what we stand for – our love of Torah, the Land, and the Jewish people. They targetted our Yeshiva because of the legacy of Rav Kook. It was an attack not only on the body, but on the soul. They are right about our spiritual power, and the death of our precious students has only made us stronger.

This past Thursday, the Yeshiva held a memorial service for the eight young Torah scholars murdered by the the terrorist, on the third anniversary of the massacre, with Torah lectures and the recitation of special prayers. "Except that it was not a memorial service in the normal sense, where we remember the victims and then move on. We remember them every single day, and if we have an event in their memory, it is to remind us to redouble our efforts to remember them every other day of the year."

Rav Shapira told how the Israel Magen David First Aid squad that arrived was warned that the terrorist, by then dead on the library floor, was probably wearing an explosive belt. Ignoring the danger, they rushed in to evacuate the wounded.

After the massacre, the Yeshiva instituted several additional study sessions dedicated to the youths, and has published numerous books in their memories. "We do much more than this as well, and our educational efforts are a great comfort to the families of the victims," Rabbi Shapira said.

Education was also the reason Rabbi Shapira took an unprecedented trip to Russia at the request of the country's chief rabbi, last month. "I went to Russia in initiate a new educational project that I hope will strengthen the communities there," he said. Those communities have been growing and thriving in ways that we could never have imagined. I traveled with Rav Goldschmidt, Russia's Chief Rabbi, to several towns out in the hinterlands – I found schools, mikvehs, synagogues, all the requirements for leading a complete Jewish life. It was very comforting to see this rebirth, after the Jews in Russia were persecuted for decades, and were given up for lost," Rabbi Shapira said, adding that "this trip shows that there is great hope for the future." He expressed the hope that this rebirth would lead to their desire to live in Israel.

3. CAMERA: Ynet Reports Staged B'Tselem Video as Fact  by Hillel Fendel Staged B'Tselem Video on Ynet

The CAMERA media watchdog organization (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America) demands that B'Tselem redress a false video its program initiated, and that Ynet retract, apologize for, and correct the false B'tselem-based article.

B'Tselem is a human rights organization that is often hyper-critical of Israel. The Jerusalem office of the CAMERA media watchdog organization reports that an Arab photographer taking part in a "citizen journalism" project initiated by B'tselem staged a video clip. The clip makes it appear that Israeli forces refused to allow an Arab mother to accompany her 11-year-old son who was detained for rock-throwing.

In fact, however, a close analysis of the video shows that it was actually Arabs on the scene who refused to allow the mother to get into the police car with her son – despite entreaties by the Israelis that she do so. CAMERA further reports that the Israeli news outlet Ynet reported the anti-Israel interpretation on both its Hebrew and English sites.

CAMERA analyzes the Jan. 25th clip by Narimen al-Tamimi, a participant in B'Tselem's film project. "A careful analysis of al-Tamimi's footage of the arrest of 11-year-old Karim al-Tamimi," the organization reports, "reveals that the scene is staged. The staged episode was then reported as fact by Ynet, a major Israeli news site, amplifying the bogus event in the public arena. B'Tselem needs to retract the false information before it spreads further...  Ynet should publish an article explaining how a B'Tselem photographer fabricated footage and passed it off to the media. Ynet should also apologize for its own failure to carefully view the manipulated video."

"Clearly," CAMERA concludes, "the human rights of 11-year-old Karim al-Tamimi, and possibly those of his mother, were of no concern to the Palestinian adults (Narimen and maybe others) who orchestrated this event, putting the boy in harm's way. The exploitation of Palestinian children by adults intent on producing defamatory anti-Israel propaganda calls out for serious investigation on B'Tselem's part. If B'Tselem can find no satisfactory solution to this phenomenon, the video project ought to be suspended to prevent harm to additional manipulated and exploited Palestinian children. Surely B'Tselem, not to mention the European Union and the governments of [B'tselem -sponsors] Holland, Norway and Britain, do not  wish to be party to the abuse of Palestinian youngsters."

A detailed report of the staged nature of the video can be viewed here.

4. IDF Bombs Terror Tunnels after Rocket Attacks on Negev  by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu IDF Avenges Rocket Attacks

(Yep, those tunnels are for smuggling in food.  LMAO.   This is how much they are starving in Gaza.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbKxiQbJ9U0
,http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/138671 MBS)

Gaza terrorists fired a rocket on the western Negev Saturday, and the Israeli Air Force bombed a Hamas smuggling tunnel and two terrorist training bases as 'Mini-Cast Lead II' continues.

No one was hurt in the rocket attack. The Air Force quickly retaliated, bombing a smuggling tunnel in northern Gaza and two terrorist training bases in central Gaza around midnight. Residents said the bases were operated by Hamas, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Secondary explosions were heard, indicating that the terror target was a factory for rockets or storehouse for explosives belonging to Hamas. No injuries were reported. The terror tunnel was intended to be used by terrorists to infiltrate into Israel and to execute terror attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians or IDF soldiers, and will continue to respond to anyone who utilizes terror against Israel," a military spokesperson said in a statement. "The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for maintaining the calm in Gaza and for any terrorist activity emanating from it."

Attacks on Israel have become routine the past month as Hamas fails to honor another pledge for a ceasefire. Last week, rocket and mortar attacks on Israel prompted IDF aerial and tank fire, which eliminated at least one terrorist.

Hamas is trying to avoid a repeat of Operation Cast Lead, which followed massive rocket attacks on major population centers in Israel.  Instead, it has deployed a strategy of firing a small number of rockets and mortars but on almost a daily basis. Last month, a Grad missile hit Be'er Sheva for the first time since Cast Lead, causing extensive damage and sending several people into shock.

5. New Government in Egypt, Former Minister Indicted  by Chana Ya'ar New Government in Egypt

Egypt's new prime minister took office Friday amid the accolades of tens of thousands of protesters in Tahrir Square, his first stop.

"I am here to draw my legitimacy from you. You are the ones to whom legitimacy belongs," newly-installed Prime Minister Essam Sharaf told the crowd of flag-waving demonstrators in Cairo.

General Mansour el-Essawy was named Interior Minister, the state news agency MENA reported. El-Essawy was quote as saying his priorities included reinforcing security, which has been lax since the upheaval began on January 25 that toppled the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The euphoria stood in stark contrast to the sober scene in an Egyptian courtroom the following day as former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly pleaded not guilty to corruption charges and suspicion of destroying evidence.

The arraignment of el-Adly was the first of what is expected to be a parade of ousted officials from the former government. Until his arrest February 17, el-Adly had controlled all police and security forces in the country since entering office in 1997.

Despite the change in administration however, the situation in Egypt is far from stable. Hundreds of protesters torched a security compound in Alexandria Friday night and mobs took over or massed around other security compounds around the nation, including the Cairo headquarters of the state security police.

6. Qaddafi Massacres Rebels, but His Troops Are Defecting  by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Qaddafi Massacres, Troops Rebel

Heavy fighting reached Tripoli Sunday morning as Muammar Qaddafi's sons led a massacre of civilians, including women and children, and attacked ambulances carrying wounded rebels.

Opposition forces have downed more Libyan air force planes and have captured tanks and heavy weapons as many soldiers defect.
Oil has become the focus of battles outside of the capital of Tripoli, and Qaddafi's forces claimed they re-captured Ras Lanuf, the site of an oil refinery in eastern Libya. Rebels maintained that the company town remains under their control. At least three government planes were downed by rebel's anti-aircraft guns.

Libya is on the brink of civil war as the rebels' rag-tag but highly motivated army moves on to Tripoli, which is heavily guarded by Qaddafi's well-trained forces and spies.

Witnesses told several foreign media that his troops, led by the dictator's sons, shot at people suspected of talking to reporters, shelled houses with tank fire and attacked ambulances.

More than 30 people, including women and children were massacred in the rebel-held city of Zawiya, 30 minutes west of Tripoli. "The tanks are shelling everything in their way, houses, [and] a mosque where hundreds of people are hiding. We can't rescue anyone, the shelling is so heavy," said a witness quoted by the London Mirror.

Qaddafi is not dismayed at the International Criminal Court's launching of an investigation of his war crimes and he has pleaded to the world to help him defeat "terrorists."

Qaddafi's air force bombed the rebel-controlled city of Benghazi Saturday in an attack that was powerful enough "to destroy a whole city," one eyewitness told CNN.

The carnage and chaos have sparked a massive flight of hundreds of thousands people to Tunisia, Egypt and more distant countries that have been able to provide naval and aerial evacuations.

The instability in Libya has contributed to a rapid hike in the price of crude oil, which was traded at $104 a barrel on Friday, the highest price in more than two years.

7. Saudi Arabia Shuts Down Shi'ite Protests  by Chana Ya'ar Saudi Arabia Shuts Down Protests

The Saudi Arabian government has clamped down on protests by Shi'ite Muslims.

In an announcement broadcast on Saudi state television, the Interior Ministry prohibited all marches and protests in the kingdom. The statement warned that security forces will use every means necessary to prevent any attempt to cause public disorder.

A ministry spokesman added that the law of the kingdom prohibits any form of protest, demonstration, or strike, including a call for such action, claiming it contravenes Sharia law, as well as Saudi traditions and values.

He accused unnamed parties of trying "to get around the systems" and "achieve illegitimate goals," according to a report by CNN.

'Days of Rage' in the Saudi Kingdom

The kingdom's Shi'ite Muslim minority, which resides primarily in the Eastern Province near the nation's oil fields, held a "day of rage" demonstration 10 days ago to demand the release of Shi'ite prisoners they feel are being held unjustly.

Three Shi'ite prisoners were freed by the government just prior to the return of King Abdullah after a three-month trip abroad for medical treatment.

Sheikh Tawfiq Al-Amer led that Friday's protest after delivering a sermon in which he called on Saudi Arabia to become a constitutional monarchy. He was arrested the following Sunday, a week ago. In addition, some 40 individuals protested in Riyadh outside the Al-Rajhi Mosque after Friday prayers and one of the organizers was arrested.

Two similar demonstrations were held in the province a day earlier, according to Human Rights First Society president Ibrahim al-Mugaiteeb. Although small, both called for the release of Shi'ite prisoners. About 200 demonstrators gathered in the city of Qatif, where at least 22 were arrested, and 100 others protested in Awamiyya.

Official: Protests 'Not Political' But Warns of Limits

Government officials downplayed the significance of the protests in a statement to CNN. "The protests that took place in the Eastern Province were small and were not political in nature," said an official, who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak with media. "The protesters weren't calling for regime change. They were asking for more jobs and calling for release of prisoners they feel were imprisoned unjustly."

Acknowledging the calls for a constitutional monarchy, the official said "Yes, there are groups here asking for more rights, calling for constitutional reforms, and that is their right to do so. King Abdullah has always encouraged a national dialogue and continues to do so."

But he made it clear that the "right to do so" has limits, warning that in Saudi Arabia, "it's not like other countries – we don't have or allow protests here." He added that government officials were not worried the protests would lead to upheaval throughout the nation. "We don't feel they will spread throughout the kingdom, or become bigger in nature," he said.

8. Netanyahu, Barak Blamed for Plastic Bullets Shot at Gilad Farm  by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu and Hezki Ezra Protest of Gilad Farm Shootings

Giant pictures of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak were hoisted across from the Knesset Sunday amid demands for a probe of the shooting at Jews by police at Gilad Farm (Havat Gilad).

"We will not allow the severe incident at Havat Gilad, where policemen shot at Jews, to be forgotten until there is a public investigation and an official statement by the government of Israel that rifles never again will be aimed towards Jews and used to shot them," said Benny Katzover, chairman of the Shomron (Samaria) Residents Committee.

"Netanyahu and Barak are responsible for what happened there. They have the power to change the situation, and they have the authority to call for order in the security forces that used the weapons against Jews," he added.

Katzover warned, "It begins with rubber and plastic bullets and can end up with live ammunition."

The government appears to have targeted Gilad Farm for punishment. After several demolitions and dozens of arrests the past year, police on the Sabbath arrested an observant Jew at the farm for allegedly damaging an olive tree of a neighboring Arab.

Last week, police staged a pre-dawn raid at Gilad Farm and shot plastic bullets at residents, 15 of whom were wounded, while two bulldozers demolished three structures, including the home of IDF soldier Shimon Weizman.

Officers kicked him out of the Kfir Brigade where he served as a combat soldier, after he said he would not return to the army until the government rebuilds his home. Dozens of comrades in Kfir have supported the soldier and have asked commanders to reinstate Weizman.

"It is totally illogical that at the same a soldier is serving in combat for the country, the government sends security forces to destroy his house," said National Union Knesset Member Dr. Michael Ben-Ari. "Netanyahu is tearing apart the fabric of Israeli society."

The police originally insisted that they did not fire bullets during the demolitions, but then later admitted to doing so. Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovitch accepted a police statement that they shot in self-defense against rock-throwing Jews. However, no photo evidence has been produced to document such attacks and residents maintained that the police began shooting without provocation.

The minister, who is responsible for the police, has not yet responded to questions by Israel National News as to whether there is any evidence and why he accepted the police version without a preliminary investigation.
